An Arkesden Blackleg

Arthur Cakebread (21), labourer, Arkesden, was summoned for being in search of game, in the daytime, on land in the occupation of Mr. Wilford Barley, at Arkesden, on the 17th Nov.

-Defendant did not appear. Mr. Bryans Ackland appeared for the prosecution.

Charles Kemp, gamekeeper's assistant, stated that on the morning in question he was going from Clavering to Splashwood, at about seven o'clock, when he saw defendant with a dog and gun. He asked him what he as after and he replied, "a rabbit, if it gets up," and witness replied, "anything else if you can get it.." He knew defendant as a poacher. He never did any work.

Superintendent Pryke stated there were 13 previous convictions against the defendant. He was a most desperate character, and nearly killed a police officer the other day. -Fined 40s. and 10s. costs, or one month.
