    Robert Merchant was born on in Bromley, Essex


    Robert Merchant joined Essex County Constabulary on .

    Before joining, Robert worked as a Ship's Plater

    In 1929 PC Merchant was awarded the Merit Badge for pluck and determination in attempting to arrest 4 men in a stolen car who assaulted him.  He was also awarded the Kings Police Medal for his involvement in the incident.


    The Record of Service in the Essex Police archives also holds: 
    1. a large bundle of reports and forms about his service, including a dispute with the widowed Mrs Gutteridge with whom he was lodging. 
    2. photographs of him wearing the KPM and newspaper reports about the incident [Part of acc E0678]
