On Saturday last Alfred Martin was charged before Col. Savill and Mr. S. Courtauld with assaulting P.s. Barnard and P.c. Sutch, on September 24th last. Prisoner was "wanted" for a previous attack on the police, and was found in a public-house in Braintree on September 24th, and when apprehended he was very violent, biting and kicking the police officers.

His term of imprisonment expired on Saturday morning when he was met at the gaol door by an officer sent to Chelmsford by Supt. Elsey for the purpose and brought back to Braintree.

Sergt. Barnard and P.c. Sutch gave evidence as to the violence of the prisoner's conduct, which was corroborated by two independent witnesses. Prisoner, who had been convicted a great many times previously, was sentenced to the full term of six months' hard labour.
